Abstract

Washington State's Office of Public Instruction has adopted the Common Core State Standards to be implemented in the 2014-15 school year. These standards provide clear expectations of learning objectives students must meet in grades K-12 in order to prepare for college and careers after high school. Teachers must now shift their teaching and assessments to reflect these new standards in their classrooms. As part of this new emphasis on more uniform curricular standards-based grading, teachers must develop rubrics that list each standard on which their students are assessed with clearly defined, measurable criteria for mastery. As part of this initial work, a principal author, a fifth-grade teacher, developed 26 rubrics based on the fifth-grade mathematics core competencies, of which three are presented.
