Abstract
Some things clicked into place for me while listening to a recent NCA panel on the future of our discipline. Part of the discussion centered on the choice between being either socially relevant humanists who can be meaningfully engaged in the solution of all of the many problems that beset modern society or returning to our academic roots--at least being true to them--and sticking to a commitment to teach the principles and insights of the discipline qua discipline, even though that doesn't [bring] the accolades that would be easily won through success at "socially relevant communicology."
