Description
Kittitas County experienced one of the worst winter snowfalls ever during the winter of 1915 - 1916. Heavy snow began falling on November 11, 1915 and the bare ground was not seen again until April 1916. Transportation was very difficult and all train travel stopped for weeks at a time. Piles of deep snow lined the sidewalks and filled the streets of Ellensburg. The town was empty of people except for two horse drawn sleds on Pearl Street when this morning photograph was taken. Looking south from Fifth Street, many of Ellensburg business buildings and hotels can be seen.Postcard postmarked 8-PM Feb. 24, 1916 Ellensburg, Wash. Handwritten note and address in purple colored pencil. Addressed to Mr. Peter Frederickson, Mondovi, Wisconsin. Note to "Dear Father" from "Anna."
