Abstract

This paper identifies four qualities of prose: unity of content, cohesion, continuation, and tone. After examining handbook definitions, the need for new definitions of these qualities was evident. Each quality is defined and a type of catalogue of representative examples is offered to aid the definitions.

The qualities of prose are part of the overall act of communication and are offered only as theory. No attempt has been made to demonstrate how to write prose which would include the qualities.
