Abstract

This study investigated the effects of a concentrated program of attitude improvement on reading skill. Seventeen low-achieving students participated. The year's instruction was divided into three phases: developmental reading during the first and third phases, and an attitude improvement program during the second.

Results from Gates-MacGinitie Reading Test and Roach Van Allen's An Inventory of Reading Attitude indicated accuracy, speed and comprehension decreased significantly during the attitude program. Vocabulary and attitude did not show significant gains. Upon reinstatement of the developmental reading program, comprehension increased and vocabulary decreased, both significantly.
