Abstract
Varied lengths of noncontingent foot shock (NCFS) followed by an ECS or NO ECS were presented 24 hours after fear conditioning to investigate the state dependency hypothesis. The hypothesis that the NCFS would interact with ECS to produce a transient attenuation of fear conditioning was not supported. Results were discussed in terms of the possibility that the state dependency hypothesis applies only to certain levels of brain excitation when NCFS and ECS are used to induce brain state changes.
