Abstract

The thesis traces the development of the Marshall mission from its inception in late 1945 to its failure in late 1946. Concentrating on Chinese internal affairs, the thesis examines the reaction of the Nationalists and Communists to mediation, and reveals the sources of failure of American policy. The concluding chapter views American China policy within the context of the civil war and suggests that the mission was incapable of altering the historical processes of the Chinese revolution.
