Abstract

The Ellsworth Creek Preserve is an environmental restoration project owned and operated by The Nature Conservancy (TNC) and located in Pacific County, Washington State. This study utilized a multi-method approach, including social science ethnographic research methods and economic modeling, with the aim of understanding how Pacific County has been impacted by the presence of the preserve. As non-governmental organizations such as TNC continue to expand their influence, it is important to understand the potential impacts that these organizations and their actions may have on local communities. The results of this research contribute to understanding the reasons for community support or opposition toward future similar restoration projects locally and globally, and provide potential options in the context of resource management that attempts to balance the needs of both communities and conservation.
