Abstract
Professionals at the secondary level in public education were surveyed by a questionnaire to obtain information concerning the role of the special education teacher at the secondary level. The survey included questions concerning the referral and assessment process, consulting with staff, monitoring of students, behavioral management, the I.E.P. process, curriculum, and legal considerations. in the education of handicapped students. The literature was reviewed and discussed in terms of the various responsibilities of the special education teacher at the secondary level as that professional works to educate handicapped students.
