The 416th Bomb Group was an American light bomber formation flying as part of the 9th Air Force in the Air War in Europe during WWII. The group participated in the major operations prior to and after the Allied amphibious landings in Normandy on June 6, 1944. The mission of the 416th and the 9th Air Force was tactical, to pave the way for the advance of Allied ground forces. The 416th’s role in the creation of and maintenance of the line of interdiction in France 1944 are discussed at length. The 416th was part of the concerted effort to isolate German forces, prevent resupply and enable the ground forces to advance more rapidly. The story of the 416th is connected to the 9th Air force and the first large scale use of a U.S. air force that coordinated with an army, with missions that are geared to ease the advance of that army.
