Abstract

The influence of holding temperatures and chilling periods on diapausing R. pomonella (apple maggot) pupae were the focus of the study. Apples were collected from Pierce and Lewis County in Washington State. After collecting R. pomonella from the fruit, the pupae were chilled at 3°C for 0, 1, 2, 5, 10, 15, 20, 25 or 30 weeks, then allowed to emerge at either 20°C or 26°C. The insects were then monitored for survivorship and eclosion. Rhagoletis pomonella would emerge fastest when held at 26°C and developed on average in fewer degree days (284±252 degree days). However, more adults emerged after IO or more weeks of chilling when held at 20 °C by up to 20%. In addition, a longer chilling period(> 20 weeks) reduced the total numbers of adults eclosing at either 26°C or 20°C.
