Archives intern Karen Valencia describes the Chinese Scroll she and Lilly Bauer found in unprocessed collections of the CWU Archives and Special Collections. Lilly, archives student worker, operates the camera and Julia Stringfellow, University Archivist assists with the display of the hanging scroll.

Found in the Archives: Jim Hawkins' Puppets
Central Washington University
This episode of Found in the Archives features a recent donation from CWU Emeritus Professor of Music, Linda Marra, who taught at the university for 26 years. Linda Marra was close friends with Jim Hawkins, who was an Emeritus Professor of Theatre Arts who taught at Central from 1970 to 2001. Jim was known for his work as a theatrical designer and puppeteer. The CWU Archives and Special Collections has a large collection of Jim’s puppets and theatrical designs, and Linda Marra donated some special additions to add to these collections.

Found in the Archives-Paul Creston

Nathan Sandell shares archival documentation about Professor Paul Creston (1906-1985), a prolific American composer during the 20th century. Professor Creston came to Central Washington State College in 1967 as Distinguished Visting Professor. He was appointed Professor of Music and Composer in Residence in 1968 and served in this role until his retirement in 1975. Creston’s compositions included orchestral works, concertos, chamber music, choral music, and those specific for string orchestra, piano, and symphonic band.

Students discovered this BAsketball COllage from 1965 in a stack of fine art prints. It is an example of why you should not use glue and tape on photographic prints. Always have a mat to keep the print off of the glass if framed. Filmed by Lilly Baur diasassembly and narration Marty Blackson. Recipes Found in the Archives

This episode features recipes made from cookbooks from the mid 1900's. These cookbooks are in the Frederick Krueger collection. They were researched and made by archive assistant Lacey Colemore especially for this round of Found in the Archives. The recipes include Mayonnaise Chocolate Cake and Pretzel Salad. Includes Helen Michaelson Home Movies from 1940 with scenes around campus and hiking accompanied by songs from central including the Alma Mater, Athletic March and Fight Song. The scenes from a trip to Shanghai in 1940 with accompanying music that was popular in Shanghai at the time. The Morris Jenkins home movies of logging parade and festival from 1966 with a couple logging songs from Sonny James and Johnny Cash. Then a commercially produced film from 1956 about the Ellensburg Rodeo. Shots of Leelooska carving and installation of the totem pole in the library.The last clip is video of Central's Jazz Chorus circa 1979.
