Abstract

The Mark Twain boat company offers tours of the Mississippi River. If 50 people sign up, the boat company charges each person $10. However, for each group of 10 people beyond the first 50, everyone's ticket price decreases by 50 cents. What sized tour group maximizes the company's revenue? Problems of this type (maximizing yield) frequently occur in first term calculus or even college algebra (where the vertex formula can be used).
