Special Issue Call for Papers

Math Circles in Times of Physical Distancing

Special Issue Editors: Dan Zaharopol, Emilie Hancock

The Journal of Math Circles is pleased to announce a call for papers for a special issue on Math Circles in Times of Physical Distancing. Please submit your abstract submissions via the Journal of Math Circles website by January 15, 2021. Initial submission of complete manuscripts is due July 15, 2021. This special issue will appear in October 2021.

The COVID-19 pandemic has upended the world in many ways, including mathematical outreach. Organizers have needed to transform their programs to virtual and/or physically-distanced formats. Attending to both logistics and the mathematics itself has been critical, and many of the adjustments made by organizers will affect programmatic change even after the pandemic ends.

In October 2020, the Journal of Math Circles (JMC) and Julia Robinson Math Festivals (JRMF) co-organized a panel on how mathematical outreach programs have adapted their efforts as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic. Panelists shared engaging mathematical activities, as well as reflections about facilitating these activities online and/or in a socially distanced format. Presentation descriptions can be found at: https://www.jrmf.org/math-circle-panel.

Our special issue will include articles written by the above-mentioned panelists, as well as complementary articles describing mathematical outreach adaptations that highlight the Math Circle core values: Exploring worthwhile mathematical tasks, Fostering problem-solving habits of mind, and Building a community of mathematical thinkers and problem solvers.

Proposals sent before January 15, 2021, that include tentative titles and 200- to 500-word abstracts will be considered by the guest editors. The guest editors will respond by February 15th, 2021, and the full contributions will be due July 15, 2021. The issue is currently expected to be published in October 2021.

You can submit abstract proposals here. Please note that if you are submitting an abstract application to be considered for the current special issue, do not upload a full text submission or any additional files during the submission process .
