Biographical Sketch

Michelle Manes is a mathematician who does research in number theory. Prior to earning her PhD in mathematics from Brown University, she worked for more than a decade in K-12 mathematics education. She has held academic positions at USC, the University of Hawaii, and ICERM. She served for three years as a Program Officer at the National Science Foundation. She is currently the Deputy Director of the American Institute of Mathematics in Pasadena, CA.

Linda Venenciano is a professor of education at Pacific University where she serves as the BEd Program Chairperson and teaches and supports early childhood through high school preservice teachers. Her scholarly work focuses on the teaching and learning of mathematics. Linda is a former mathematics teacher and has taught students from first grade through undergraduate. She has previously served as Interim Director and as a mathematics education faculty member at the University of Hawai‘i’s Curriculum Research & Development Group.

Seanyelle Yagi has been a mathematics educator for more than twenty years, as an elementary and middle school teacher, a mathematics coach, and a state level resource teacher. She is currently an Associate Specialist in Mathematics Education at the University of Hawaii with research interests in advancing innovative curriculum and instructional approaches in grades K–8 mathematics.

Abstract

We describe a single Math Teachers’ Circle session during which a group of teachers collectively engaged in a “mini mathematics research experience.” This provides a model for providing research experiences for mathematics teachers through content-based professional development programs. We conjecture that these experiences will have many of the same benefits as research experiences for teachers in lab sciences.

Description of Program

The Math Teachers Circle of Hawaii was founded in 2011 and has run continuously since then. Originally located at the University of Hawaii at Manoa and facilitated by the three authors of this article (Michelle Manes, Linda Venenciano, and Seanyelle Yagi), it has since moved to the University of Hawaii - West Oahu campus and is facilitate by faculty members Laurie James (ljames7@hawaii.edu) and Veny Liu (venyliu@hawaii.edu).
