Abstract
Every year in the U.S., thousands of college undergraduates have to decide between paying for expensive textbooks or paying utility or grocery bills. Many leave the university due to high costs of attendance. In recent years, the retention rate for Central Washington University is on the decline. Reducing the costs of attendance, by reducing the cost of learning materials, could help to restore and even improve our student retention, as evidenced by a new study released by Achieving the Dream (ATD). A new effort by CWU’s OER Task Force, the No Textbook Cost General Education Pathway Project, incentivizes faculty at Central Washington University (CWU) to replace expensive textbooks with Open Educational Resources as part of the redesign of their courses for the new CWU General Education Framework, to be implemented for Fall 2019. See how these two librarians found a way to help students within this new framework, providing a choice opportunity to include OER in these courses, and providing our undergraduates a path to complete their entire general education requirement with no textbook expenses.
