Abstract
One thing that is often overlooked when reviewing leadership is how the same qualities that can make a quality leader also apply to followership. While effective followership is a quality that might be mentioned when reviewing leadership, the topic does not get as much attention in large seminar presentations like TEDx Talks that are intended to have a large influence or take away for the audience. During my presentation, I will combine aspects described in the Full Range Leadership Model’s three overarching leadership types, and the four leadership styles described in the DiSC profile to discuss examples of leaders and followers through history that have demonstrated these leadership qualities while fulfilling two separate roles in a mission. These separate qualities were demonstrated when an oxygen tank exploded during Apollo 13, and engineers at NASA developed a carbon dioxide filter adapter to fit into a differently shaped filter hole in a day and a half, phrased “A square peg in a round hole”. Without the quality of followership and leadership displayed, the crew of Apollo 13 would have suffocated.
