Abstract

Globalization has resulted in a demographic shift, and as a result the United States is growing in diversity every day. Students need to be able to identify with teachers and the curriculum. With primarily white women teachers there is a lack of representation on multiple sides of diversity. This is shown in movies as well. Through this project I will analyze ten movies to detect biases toward men. Using the Washington Models for the Evaluation of Bias (2009) I will look for patterns and practices broadly used to portray men in movies. Recommendations will be made to teachers, parents, and librarians about purchasing and adopting books and instructional materials that are inclusive of the student’s experiences. Students all need to have role models, in movies as well as teachers. This starts with being aware of how the portrayal of males in movies could affect students. What are young students seeing men as through the lenses of movies. What kind of examples are there? What diversity is represented for males in movies. Annotated bibliographies will be distributed so that other teachers can begin to conduct their own original research with respect to biases in existing instructional materials. Through this process, teachers can inch closer to becoming culturally competent.
