Abstract

During the course of a 15,000 mile tour from coast to coast taken this past summer for the purpose of studying the "straw-hat" theatres, over 150 producing organizations were visited. On the basis of a ten-week season it may be considered that about 1,500 productions were given in these summer theatres, and the tour included a generous sampling of rehearsals and performances from the many given.

New plays, which provide the particular subject-matter of this review, were being produced by approximately one-third of the theatres, most of them doing but one new script, seldom more than three or four new scripts during the summer season. There were about 100 new plays in production during the summer, but this figure includes new versions or rewritings.
