Abstract

This paper applies the theory of image restoration discourse to the public outcry over the Pope's 2009 revocation of the excommunication of four schismatic Society of Saint Pius X Bishops. The author argues that the Church correctly implemented image restoration strategies, but that the very organizational and rhetorical characteristics of the Church complicate the articulation of an adequate, timely response easily digestible by the media and public opinion.
