Abstract

This study required six groups of Ss (four preschool groups, first graders and adults) to solve one of two types of solution shifts: a reversal (R) and a half reversal (HR). It was hypothesized that greater linguistic skill would yield higher performance on the R shift relative to the HR shift. The results of the present study indicated that the gifted Ss, first graders, and adults all performed better on the R shift relative to the HR shift even though problem solving ability in general improved with older Ss. The difference in performance between shifts for the other three groups of preschoolers was minimal, suggesting that mediational development may have been in a stage of transition.
