Abstract

This paper considers the life, the character and the compositional styles of Gustav Mahler, especially as they relate to the song cycle Lieder eines fahrenden Gesellen. The four songs which comprise the cycle are discussed from the aspects of melody, meter and rhythm, harmony and tonality, texture, form and accompaniment.
