Abstract

There are many ways to be a good leader, the Full Range Leadership Model, developed by James MacGregor is one of the most unique and dynamically applicable approaches to leadership in industry today. In my presentation, I will be discussing in depth how the transformational leadership styles of Idealized Influence and Individual Consideration can be used to effectively lead and develop followers. Idealized Influence is the most commonly thought of style of leadership, leading by example, where the leader “Walks the talk” so to speak, and inspires his/her people to work hard by being a good role model and setting a good example for behavior. These types of leaders tend to be more team orientated and are less focused on mentoring individuals. This is where the second leadership style comes in, Individual Consideration. Individual Consideration is more of a one on one approach to leadership, using personal relationships developed with your people to motivate and encourage them to grow themselves and to become leaders themselves. The type of leader who will employ this style of leadership tends to be very trusting and puts a lot of faith into their followers. This presentation will provide examples of both leadership styles through an exploration of the achievements and hardships faced by one of today’s greatest self-made entrepreneurs, Elon Musk.
