Abstract
Social media has become a predominant feature in contemporary culture and it is increasingly important that scholars assess the impact and implications of its many facets. As online sharing tools like YouTube, Instagram, Facebook, and others, continue to evolve, so does the way we interact with, and manipulate, these platforms – as complex tools, allowing us to freely share, create, and connect with one another. Current scholarly analysis of social media platforms, internet communities, and online content creation fails to include the perspective of the younger generation who grew up heavily influenced by social media content. While there is ample discussion of the marketing potential of media platforms and communities, and even developed discussion regarding sharing platform specific cultural memes, little is said directly about the individuals creating new and unique content for social media, what that content contains, and further, who those content creators are as cultural influencers. My work explores the current academic conversations around social media content creation, social media content creators, online communities and their influence on young internet natives, and the future of content creation. It explores a framework for distinguishing their work from other online content. Analyzing the work of online artists and content creators on social media will be an important step forward in understanding impact of social internet culture. Developing an appreciation of individual creators will improve the experience of online artists and content creators following these pioneers of online communities, online business, and online art creation.
