Abstract
Cardiovascular disease has been identified as a major health problem in the United States. It caused more than 930,000 deaths in 1990—43% of all deaths in the United States. Coronary heart disease alone is responsible for up to 1.5 million heart attacks per year and 500,000 deaths annually. The American Heart Association estimated that the cost of cardiovascular disease in 1993 was $117.4 billion.
