Abstract
The purpose of this project was to develop whole language cooperative learning activities to be used by secondary students in a cross-age tutoring program with first grade students. Results of the project, under-taken in the Highland School District, Cowiche, Washington, included: 1. Instructional time and individual student attention (i.e., time on task) for first grade students was increased. 2. Activities were developed to support reading instruction. 3. Activities that met the needs of the cross-age tutoring program was developed. 4. Activities were developed that could be adapted for varied instructional support situations.
