Abstract
In recent issues of the Washington Education Journal articles have appeared attacking or defending present philosophy and practice with reference to the promotion of pupils in the elementary schools. It has usually been contended that the point of view supported by many educational leaders that all pupils regardless of ability or school performance should be regularly promoted was unwarranted and, in fact, socially unwise and detrimental to the welfare of the children involved. Contentions pro and con do not, however, constitute the entire picture; actual school practices, while tending to maintain a more conservative, middle-ground position, define more clearly than other data just what school administrators and teachers believe and are willing to put into practice.
